The Russian Ballet Academy (RBA) opened it’s doors at the beginning of last year (2011) with the purpose of promoting the Vagarnova method in South Africa.
During the visit of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company in 2011 a number of students from to RBA were chosen to participate in a production of the Nutcracker. The production was very well received by the public and was the start of a relationship with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company.
The idea to form a youth ballet company to support visiting Russian ballet companies and to promote dance as a performing art amongst the youth grew from the association with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company and during November 2012 the Imperial Youth Ballet Company (IYBC) will open its doors in South Africa. As a non profit organization the IYBC will strive to develop dancers and give children from all backgrounds the opportunity to perform on stage. An annual youth production will afford all the members of the IYBC the chance to perform in a full length production whilst many cast members will also perform with visiting ballet companies.
Various development programs, including a foreign exchange and study program, are being developed. An outreach program for disadvantaged and less privileged children will afford these children access to the world of dance.
Since the launch of the company in Nov 2013 one of our dancers have become the first South African to go on tour with a Russian Ballet Company. During May of this year 5 of our dancers also spent some time in Latvia for training with the Imperial Russian Ballet Youth program.
From 2014 the new home of the IYBC will be the Pretoria State Theatre and we are looking forward to a bright future.
